Surflight Theater Summer Update
A Bit About Steve
Steve has had a long career in the performing arts, beginning over 59 years ago when his first paying job at 14 was in a rock and roll band. Steve attended Webster University studying music. Following several years as a professional musician and avocational actor, Steve went back to school for a year toward as Masters Degree in Acting. Steve then headed to NY at age 30 to give Broadway a try. Over the next 16 years he was fortunate to work almost nonstop in the theatre, including 3 Broadway: Anything Goes 1987 revival, Buddy Holly…The Buddy Holly Story and State Fair, 3 Off-Broadway: Annie Warbucks (Senator Vandenberg, U/S Warbucks), Return to the Forbidden Planet (Dr. Prospero and 5 musical instruments), Honky Tonk Highway (MD, Orchestrations, Vocal arrangements and Actor), 6 National Tours and dozens of Regional Productions. In late 1997 Steve applied for and was offered the Artistic Director position at Surflight Theatre, and moved to Beach Haven in February 1998.
In addition to his work at Surflight, Steve has directed 4 National Tours, 8 major Casino Productions and more than 50 Regional Productions in 17 states, including Ring Of Fire, All Shook Up, Buddy…The Buddy Holly Story, Spitfire Grill and Once for Laguna Playhouse. In addition to his work in the theatre, Steve is on the boards of: The South Jersey Cultural Alliance (Past President) and The Ocean County Tourism Advisory Committee (Chair). He served for many years as Treasurer of ArtPride NJ, and continues on their Finance Committee. He served 10 years on the Council (Board) of Actors’ Equity Association as the Chair of Developing Theatre and Guest Artist. Steve is the proud recipient of The Cultural Access Task Force’s Innovator Award for his forward thinking and hiring practices for Artists with Disabilities.
